When something goes wrong with electrical equipment, appliances or installations, the overriding temptation is to have a go at electrical fault finding yourself.
Electricians understand why you may think that way, but what we don’t really understand is why you think you don’t need someone qualified to sort the problem out? Take, me for example, more than 35 years in this job and I have come across every electrical fault and problem you can think of in domestic and commercial properties! I am very adept at finding out what is wrong quickly, but that is because of all my years of experience on the job. Plus, my first jobs were in industrial settings (Car Industry, Semiconductors and more!) where faults had to be found immediately or halt the production line, so you have to know all the possibilities and eliminate them one by one. Yet, for some reason, often people with no electrical experience or qualifications think that electrical fault finding is something anyone can find and put right.
I commonly come across people trying to fix fittings, while their partner explains they took a photo of the wires before they tried to repair the problem, and they can’t understand why it keeps tripping at the fuse board when they switch it back on again!
In my experience, although it may cost money to hire a registered electrician to find and fix the fault, it saves time, frustration, and arguments and it’s done properly first time! Plus, it has the added bonus that you have the confidence that your electrics will be safe.
This is especially true in a commercial setting, where ineptitude or bad electrical repairs may put employees and visitors at risk, while the business owner could incur a fine for not protecting those on their business premises from the dangers of electrical installations or equipment.

Understanding electrical safety is important with an average of 20,000 fires a year in the UK caused by electrical appliances. So here are a few tips that will not only make your home safer, they may save you a few pennies by ensuring your appliances run efficiently and last longer.
For electrical safety, unplug your appliances when they are not in use to prevent power surges and overheating. If you can’t or don’t want to unplug everything when not in use, make sure they are shut down. Shutting appliances down rather than leaving them on standby could save each household around £35 per year. Actually this figure will be much higher following this year’s rocketing energy prices, so save yourself a few quid by shutting down or unplugging!
Most electrical appliances require a flow of air, so they stay cool. Appliances pushed against the wall or placed in cabinets or corners have a risk of overheating. Likewise, exhaust fans are there for a reason – to keep the equipment or appliance cool and ensure there is airflow. Dusty and dirty fans hinder this process and will increase the risk of appliances overheating, so make sure you clean them regularly.
Filters in washing machines and tumble dryers for example, are there to gather dirt and debris. This means they require cleaning out, so the dirt collected doesn’t clog the filter and stop the machine from working properly or again, overheating.
How do you know that you have a faulty appliance or circuit? Electrical installations and appliances can deteriorate over time because:
• Components wear out
• Accidental damage, such as dropping an appliance
• Corrosion
• Wiring can be damaged by burst pipes or water ingress
• General wear and tear through usage
• Overloading circuits
The electrical circuit in your home is designed to handle a finite amount of energy passing through it. If you plug too many appliances into it, the circuit may not be able to handle the amount of energy passing through. This will result in an automatic trip out to shut off the power to prevent the system overheating and causing a fire. If you have a faulty circuit breaker, the risk of a fire is increased. To prevent this happening, try to limit the number of plugs per outlet and avoid using extension cords and multi-outlet converters. If you notice any of the following, hire a professional electrician like S Barker Electrical to come and check out your electrics and make sure they are safe:
• Humming noises coming from switches or outlets
• Scorched plugs
• Lights dimming when other appliances are switched on
• Warm outlets or switch covers
Other signs that you may have an electrical fault are:
• When an appliance just stops working
• Fuses repeatedly blowing
• Even though the appliance is working, there is a funny smell coming from it
• It is working but keeps flickering, lights or lamps particularly
• An appliance is working but only intermittently

There is a difference between domestic and commercial electricians. I have pointed out the main differences here, but for more information check out my blog ‘How to find an electrician to PAT test’.
Domestic electricians undertake work such as repairing/updating fuse boards and running cables in residential houses or flats. They know about domestic electrical systems and how to comply with building regulations.
Commercial electricians need to follow certain industry standards and regulations in environments such as offices, shops or hospitality settings sometimes also work in warehouses and factories. They may have to work on complex systems, different wiring setups and higher voltages than you would find in residential houses or flats. There is also a requirement for them to know about health and safety at work, such as working from height.
